After graduating from Michigan State University as an undergraduate, I did my teaching internship at Sycamore Elementary in Holt, MI as a graduate student. At this time, Sycamore had been a balanced calendar for three years. With this calendar, school starts at the beginning of August and ends at the end of June. Through this schedule it's been found that it helps keep student data from slipping over long breaks, especially during the summer. I very much enjoyed this schedule while doing my student teaching and can see the benefits of it.
I was lucky enough to be placed with Traci Steere who had been teaching 2nd grade at Sycamore for 15 years. Under her guidance I began feeling more confident in my teaching abilities. During the Fall of 2014, I first started teaching writing, vocabulary, and phonics during our literacy instruction, as well as our math instruction. In the Spring of 2015 we started the new year off with Social Studies and Science while also continuing to teach literacy and math in the classroom.
While at Sycamore I also created a second grade website for parents and students to stay connected to what we're doing in class throughout the year. On it, I updated our spelling words and question for each week based on our Reading Street curriculum. I also posted photos from various class functions (field trips, holiday parties, instruction time, etc.) and reminded families of important dates (conferences, winter walk through, voting, etc.)

I also planned the activities for our school's "March is Reading Month." This time of year has always been one of my favorites as a student, so as a teacher I truly love celebrating my love for reading with my students.
